International students can study in public universities without any tuition fees. Germany is a country where you can actually study masters without any tuition fees. All you have to pay is “administrative fees” at the beginning of every semester which will come around 100-200 euros for your public transport, student services, etc. 

Considering the living costs, there are certain fixed costs for every month. This includes your monthly room rent, health insurance, contribution to tv/radio, etc. 

  • Room rent – 300 euros/month
  • Insurance – 86 euros
  • Radio/ tv contribution – 20 euros
  • Internet/ other costs – 20 euros
  • Food – 165 euros
  • Clothing – 60 euros

These are just average amounts. This can go high or low depending on the city you live in. For example, cities like Berlin and Munich are very expensive whereas cities like Chemnitz are budget cities. Therefore, your monthly expenses can vary from 400- 500 euros.

You can apply for either the winter semester or the summer semester programs. The winter semester programs start in October. The deadline for applications to the winter semester 15th July. You can start applying from the start of June for winter programs. However, the summer semester starts in April and you can start applying for it from the beginning of December. The last date to apply for the summer semester is 15th January.

If you want to study in Germany, you have to apply for a German national visa. You have to submit the documents directly at the consulate. You will have to attend an interview at the consulate, followed by the application.

Documents required for visa:

  1. All educational certificates
  2. Passport photos with white background, not older than three months
  3. Valid Passport:  Passport should remain valid for three months even after the expiry of the applied visa. 
  4. Employment history if applicable with previous employment certificates from all employers. 
  5. Marriage certificates with spouse and children documents, if applicable. 
  6. Original and two copies of the academic degree and transcript attested by Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). 
  7. Proof of financial requirements.
  8. Income and bank statements for the last 6 months of your sponsor. 
  9. All the documents related to the scholarship, if applicable. 
  10. The student has to submit preliminary health insurance with the application. It should cover the time period until the course completes. 
  11. Student visa Security questionnaire Forms 
  12. Student visa applicant’s declaration form
  13. Proof of language abilities according to the standards of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE).

Financial requirements

All applicants should deposit the minimum required money in a blocked account, which is  853€ per month or 10,236€ per year. However, many students deposit more amount to increase the chance for visa approval. 

Visa fee: The typical Germany study visa fee is €60, which is almost equal to Rs. 4,800 in India. 

Processing time: Generally it takes 5-10 weeks to get the approval.
